Description
In Indian tradition, Utane (a traditional herbal paste) has long been used for daily bathing. One such practice, which harmoniously blends Ayurveda with daily life, is the ‘Abhyanga Snan’ a bath taken after first applying oil and then Utane to the body.
First, apply Abhyanga oil to your entire body and let it soak in for 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, soak the Utane (herbal scrub paste) in water for 15 to 30 minutes. If applying oil is not feasible, mix milk into the soaked Utane . When bathing, first wet your body with warm water, then rub the soaked Utane all over your body and let it sit for 5 minutes. Afterward, enjoy your bath with pleasantly warm water. Do not use soap.
During the ritual baths of Diwali, on Naraka Chaturdashi, we experience the joy of a mother’s affectionate touch; on Diwali Padwa, we are stirred by the delicate touch of a loved one; and on Bhaubij, we are gladdened by the loving touch of a sister. Here, the Utane (herbal paste) serves as the medium for the touch of love within these relationships.
An Abhyanga-snan (ritual oil massage and bath) renders the skin soft, radiant, and glowing. The use of genuine, aromatic natural herbs in this process prevents body odor and imparts a delightful fragrance to the body; it brightens skin darkened by sun exposure or other factors and improves overall skin health. Furthermore, the herbal paste (Utane) acts as a preventive measure against microbial infections caused by atmospheric pollution and sweat.
In his treatise Ashtanga Hridaya, the sage Vagbhata has described the practice of using this herbal paste as part of the daily regimen (Dinacharya) as follows:
“Udvartanam kapharam medas: pravilayanam.
Stabilization of Organs Twak Prasadkaran Param.” Ref.-A.H.Su.2/14
‘Udvartanam’ refers to the practice of vigorously rubbing a herbal paste (Utane) onto dry skin in the direction of the heart. This process facilitates the dissolution of Kapha and Meda (adipose tissue); essentially, these elements melt away, thereby reducing excess body weight. It strengthens and tones the muscles and vital organs, while also eliminating skin wrinkles. Udvartanam enhances blood circulation, removes dead skin cells, promotes the formation of new cells, and unclogs pores. Consequently, the skin appears radiant, healthy, glowing, fresh, and attractive.
Therefore, everyone is encouraged to preserve the natural gift of their physique by continuing the ancient tradition of bathing daily with Dandekar’s Utane…
Dandekar’s Utane—offering the experience of a loving, affectionate touch.
